SEW full of memories...

Posted by Judy aka L@dybug (Brooksville, FL, United States) on 1 June 2012 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

...of the days of my dressmaking business in CT. This memory box contains samples of fabrics I sewed on for customers (silk from China, cotton from France, slipcover fabric, etc.), antique thimbles and spools, a few ladybug gifts, and the first dollar I earned in that business.
The old Mason jars filled with buttons and spools, came from the cellar of my great-grandfather's home in MA, given to my by the current owner.

Yet these days commercial interests have persuaded us that everything is virtually "disposable". No more make do and mend, just go out and buy a new one.
Values have changed, and not for the better.

@Curly: I hear you re; the "disposable" era we live in, but there are still many who chose to 'wield a needle' ... <grin>

What a wonderful and creative distillation of the past, and such a poignant memory for me too. My mom made matching dresses for us 3 sisters. Ginhams and flower prints, poka dots, and it is all a tapestry of love and ...well, like a creative garden. I have a machine on my desk which I really want to use to make my own (long flowing) fun flower print house dresses, again.

1 Jun 2012 12:51pm

@Joyce: Thank you, Joyce; I'm happy you can relate to some of our shared past. I do wear some 'long flowing' muu muus that I make - so simple and comfortable during our hot, Florida summers. 'D
