Lovely Lane Chapel at Epworth-by-the-Sea

Posted by Judy (Brooksville, Florida, United States) on 25 October 2009 in Architecture and Portfolio.

From the plaque on the grounds:

Lovely Lane Chapel
"Built in 1880, the chapel is now the oldest church building on St. Simons Island. Repaired following a hurricane in 1897m deconsecrated in 1911 and used as a recreation center, the chapel was reconsecrated after the Methodists purchased the property in 1949. Restored under the leadership of Bishop Arthur J. Moore, the chapel is now a favorite place for worship, weddings, baptisms and prayer. The magnificent stained glass windows are irreplaceable pieces of Old English Art Glass. The Methodists renamed the church Lovely Lane Chapel after the site of the 1784 founding conference of American Methodism in Baltimore, MD.
PROVIDING AN ATMOSPHERE OF THE NEARNESS OF GOD."

Thank you so much for visiting my blog; your comments are greatly appreciated. I apologize for not getting to all of your posts. I will visit as time permits.

Marvelous. I well remember Bishop Moore from when I was growing up as a Methodist in Florida in the 30s, 40s and 50s.

@john4jack: Wow, that is interesting that you knew Bishop Moore back in your childhood.

Bishop Moore was a very powerful figure in the Methodist Church. In fact, Methodist bishops have always been among the most powerful of all church prelates, or at least they used to be. In the 40s and 50s in the South, they could move any Methodist pastor at the Annual Conference to any church they pleased. Some were benevolent (hopefully benevolent) dictators.

@john4jack: Not growing up as Methodists, we weren't drawn by their doctrine, but by the love of the people that made up the church. In our 21 years in Florida, we've had pastors who have stayed a dozen or more years, four years, one year and now we are hopeful our present pastor will stay 'forever'. :D
He is truly "benevolent".

This place has a great history and is one of those special stops well worth making. You've shot it beautifully Judy. Welcome back from your travels.

@Viewfinder: Thank you, Glenn ... we knew nothing of this particular place until I began receiving messages from them at the church office. I decided to call for information and we were blessed with a wonderful place to begin our vacation!
