Silly Argiope aurantia...

Posted by Judy (Brooksville, Florida, United States) on 6 October 2009 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

When a neighbor called to say, "Come, see my garden spider," ... yup, I went!

In North America, Argiope aurantia is commonly known as the "black and yellow garden spider", "Corn Spider" or "writing spider," because of the similarity of the web stabilimenta to writing.

In England, Argiope bruennichi, where it is found only on the southern coast, and in other parts of Europe, including Germany, is also known as the wasp spider. The East Asian species Argiope amoena is known in Japan as kogane-gumo. In Australia, Argiope keyserlingi and A. aetherea are known as St. Andrew's Cross spiders, for their habit of resting in the web with legs outstretched in the shape of an X, the cross of St. Andrew. The large white zigzag in the centre of its web is called the stabilimentum or web decoration.

In the Philippines, it is known as "gagambang ekis", which translates to "X spider".

Thank you so much for visiting my blog; your comments are greatly appreciated. I apologize for not getting to all of your posts. I will visit as time permits.

Judy this is such an incredible close up.....soory that you won't be able to read any of our comments or make any until your computer is fixed. I HOPE THAT OTHERS CAN READ THIS. JUDY CALLED THIS ME THIS AFTERNOON TO SAY THAT HER COMPUTER IS FRIED. THERE WAS ACTUALLY SMOKE COMING OUT OF IT, SO SHE IS LIABLE TO BE OFF LINE FOR A WHILE.

6 Oct 2009 5:50am

@Marion: Thank you, Marion ... it was a really scary situation, but thankfully my personal firefighter got the PC outside before the acrid smoke penetrated too much of the house. Our computer tech took the situation very seriously and in less than 24 hours, I had it back. More to be done after we return from our trip. Hugs, Judy

Oh my! Thanks Marion for updating us on the situation. My best for a speedy fix on the computer, Judy.
This is a stunning macro. The neighbors certainly know who to call. The clarity and colors are outstanding.
Great shot, Judy. I also enjoyed the detailed facts. I have seen those zig-zag webs, so unusual and interesting.
They are a "good" spider to have in the garden.
I hope you are back online soon.

@Barbara: Hi Barb ... writing briefly from work.
Thanks for the comment ... and did you see Gabriela's shot of the same spider (but the belly) in the Spotlight?

My computer issue is partially fixed and Mike is going for it as I type. It was my secondary HD that burned; the 'C' drive is fine. They have never seen one short out as this one did - don't know if it was a faulty drive or the power supply to it, but it fried! I will have a new secondary HD installed after we get back from our trip, but if all goes well, I'll be back online later this afternoon.

Wow, what a super view of this beauty! And what a great set of facts on it! Are you the friendly, local "Spiderwoman" in your neighborhood?

6 Oct 2009 10:58am

@Viewfinder: Not really, Glenn ... I'm not a "spiderwoman" but our neighbor's find was pretty! :p

Japanalia from Yokohama, Japan

It has a very interesting design....I can see a kitty sitting on its tails with all fours up! A very good capture and such a documented introduction!!! WOW! Yoshiyuki had no idea that this is a koganegumo! I learned a lot from you today! And we both had a good look at your shot.....I wish I could get such clarity!

6 Oct 2009 1:56pm

@Japanalia: I'm so happy your 'belly view' made the Spotlight. This is the back view of the same creature.
Glad the info was interesting for you.
This was a hand-held shot and just a tad of sharpening; I'm sure your camera would do it also.xx

That is a very interesting story you wrote Judy. I think I have seen familiar looking ones on top of our overgrown areas in the fields....around the wet areas.....the kids used to collect them. Geesh didn't I hate that when they did that.

Now I'm being brave here as I have a deep and very real phobia of spiders thanks to something that happened when I was a child.... Nope, I cannot look any lonmger, I have to run and hide......

5 Dec 2009 4:58pm

@SOUL AFLAME: Ha, ha ... sorry to scare you away ....... I don't like them either, but that's what my macro lens is for; I didn't have to get too close! :D
