@Chris: Thanks to the zoom lens and camera hiding my face, I was able to get to within about 15 feet of him. :D

GReat catch here Judy...... they are beautiful.......when is see them in my backyard, they normally take off, as soon as they see me.....You were quite lucky!!!!

@Susan: I find that if I keep the camera in front of my face and don't have direct eye contact, I can usually get pretty close - here, about 15' from him.

@Lambspun: I walked out from our friends' porch thinking the door would scare him; it didn't. Then as I slowly walked down the bank to the water, camera in front of my face, I got to within about 15' of him.
