As comfortable as possible...

Posted by Judy (Brooksville, Florida, United States) on 30 August 2009 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

In June, 2004, we drove from Florida to our daughter's in New Jersey for a two-week visit. An hour after arriving, I missed one of the steps and fell, shattering my ankle. Surgery followed for a 7" plate, 7 pins, and two 2" screws, and no weight-bearing ordered for 4 months. I couldn't take the stairs. so our daughter & son-in-law gave us their master bed/bath for the duration our visit. We managed very well, with much credit given to our son-in-law. He's a gem, but that's one heck of a way to get to know your inlaws!

The wheel chair and crutches became standard equipment; a recliner was moved to allow me access to the family room computer. You name it, they made me as comfortable as possible. Therapy 3x/week all summer and finally in September another surgery to remove the 2" screws, and we were allowed to drive home.

Belle is happy on Dad's lap here, and Susan is visible through her kitchen window, while other guests were having fun in the pool.

Thank you so much for visiting my blog; your comments are greatly appreciated. I apologize for not getting to all of your posts. I will visit as time permits.

That's no way to spend a holiday kiddo. You look pretty happy in this picture regardless of the shattered ankle. But then you have always rolled with the punches.

@Marion: God gave us a sense of humor to exercise, not to sit upon, right? <grin>

tyan from Singapore, Singapore

this looks like realaxing place to be,i hope there are no side effects for your ankle now?You look radiant and rosy, you are a strong woman to endure that pain!:)

@tyan: Yes, there are side effects, going down stairs is a challenge, but I can walk on it. I can also tell when we're about to have bad weather. :D

Lorraine from Gatineau, Canada

I know about your love for your family, it is in every photo, it is in every smiles even when hurt...I love this togetherness, it's beautiful and comforting x

@Lorraine: Some things about aging are no fun, but the benefits of looking back over things we've survived is great.

Well.....without your story I wouldn't have noticed!!!!! You both look so cheerful, so happy! And...so comfortable!

30 Aug 2009 9:35am

@Japanalia: Normally I don't sit with my leg on the arm of the chair. *smile*
Later that summer I could soak my leg in the pool, but no swimming. :(

Barbara from Florida, United States

An incredible story, to realize you traveled all that way and then this happens.
Pins, screws, nuts, and bolts sound too painful to smile but there you 3 are with your trademark cheerful smiles.
Making access to the computer comfortable as well really added pampered to being well taken care of by family.
Belle and Mike are keeping a close eye on you too.
Hopefully you do not have any lasting effects from the break.

30 Aug 2009 12:41pm

@Barbara: It was not fun when it happened, but the bonding that took place that summer was a bonus.
Mike kept busy doing odd jobs around the house and yard, painted the family room, etc.
When he was busy, Charlie was the one checking up on me. It's a summer we look back on fondly.
As I replied to Tyan, my ankle is a good barometer and it doesn't like going down steps. :D

Betty from Phillipsburg, United States

I'm amazed at your wonderful smile, Judy! What an ordeal! Your daughter and son-in-law are wonderful people! That's a summer to remember!

@Betty: Yes, there are lots of good people in your state! :D
A summer to remember for sure!

@susan: Just the red wine you saw in the glass on the table ... <grin>
I'm with you - glad it's in the past!

Judy, you've had way too many bad lucks physically. You poor girl! But nice to be with folks then :)

@Lambspun: Life offers many bumps in the road, but as I see it, it's not what happens to you, but the way you cope and bounce back. For that, I thank God. xx
