Musk Ox Duo in Palmer, AK

Posted by Judy (Brooksville, Florida, United States) on 7 July 2009 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

My Silly Tuesday post, though this animal is far from silly.

Musk Ox love dandelions, so here I am, feeding one to him. Their fur is phenomenal, eight times warmer than sheeps' wool, and is called Qiviut. It is pronounced ki - vee - ute, and means down or underwool in the Eskimo language. In English it means specifically the soft greyish-brown underwool of the rare Arctic animals, the musk ox. Watch a short video here.

Thank you so much for visiting my blog; your comments are greatly appreciated. I apologize for not getting to all of your posts. I will visit as time permits.

tyan from Singapore, Singapore

wow, then he must be feeling quite hot in his fur,was it very hot then?

7 Jul 2009 2:54pm

@tyan: Once they shed their warm undercoat, they're no hotter than other furry animals, but in the harsh winter that qiviut keeps them toasty warm!

Barbara from Florida, United States

There is a silly look on his face as he takes the dandelion from you. Interesting to learn more about this unique creature. He seems gentle like a pet, but remember dandelions and fingers make the same sound CRUNCH!
I've had it done with a horse.
I like both images.

@Barbara: We were amazed at how gentle they were, but then these are on a farm - not sure how they would be out in the vast wilderness of Alaska.
Thankfully he didn't taste my fingers! :D

Lorraine from Gatineau, Canada

oh my gosh how priceless, he's beautiful...

8 Jul 2009 2:32pm

@Lorraine: I think he is too, Lorraine, though Kristy, who lives right near that farm thinks they're ugly. <grin>

kristy from Wasilla, Alaska, United States

those guys have to be the ugliest animals i've ever seen:) once in a lifetime memories, huh? it's fun for me to see someone else's alaskan adventure as i get to live out my own! do you know my friend carolyn in AR? i think i stumbled on your photoblog after seeing a comment you made on hers?

8 Jul 2009 11:13pm

@kristy: Ugly? God made them and he doesn't make junk, right? <grin>
It was all about new experiences and we certainly can't see musk ox in Florida. :D
If I commented on Carolyn's photo it must have been something I liked in Community.

Japanalia from Yokohama, Japan

The photo placed downwards is most endearing! I like to see such a big animal among dandelions! (somehow the thought is hilarious!) And I watched the video you recommended.....what a surprise to see how beautiful are knits made of their wool!

@Japanalia: The Qiviut yarn is extremely expensive ... and often described as "light as smoke" ... natural and so beautiful.
