They are NOT made of concrete...

Posted by Judy (Brooksville, Florida, United States) on 24 March 2009 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

Real, live, sunbathing alligators, seen at Homosassa Springs State Park last week with our granddaughter, Kayla.

Thank you so much for visiting my blog; your comments are greatly appreciated. I apologize for not getting to all of your posts. I will visit as time permits.

Mandy Provan from Johannesburg, South Africa

I love your title Judy because they really do look as if they could be made out of concrete or stone the way the lie so terribly still! A lovely shot - I am sure your granddaughter enjoyed the visit with you and Mike! :)

24 Mar 2009 6:14am

@Mandy Provan: Lots of folks at the park thought they weren't real, hence my title.
Yes, Kayla loved the attraction! ;D

Linerberry from Sumner, Christchurch, New Zealand

Its a nice life ay!!!! Great shot!

24 Mar 2009 6:54am

@Linerberry: Thanks, Liners ... sorry, not 'silly' today! :(

Viewfinder from Bradenton, FL, United States

Nice shot. A really typical Florida look - at least as far as our attractions go. Sunning themselves, gators really can look like a clump of stone or concrete. Mixed in with shoreline grasses, it would be easy to step on one... a fatal miss-step, I suppose, for many a wild thing on its diet.

24 Mar 2009 11:21am

@Viewfinder: You are so right, VF ... a huge "miss-step" if anyone overlooked their aliveness.

Laurie from New Jersey, United States

Yikes! Good thing there is a fence! They look massive.

Such cool and fascinating creatures.

24 Mar 2009 11:34am

@Laurie: They are wonderful, and prehistoric creatures to be sure. You're right on the 'fence'!

Barbara from Florida, United States

My adrenaline in rushing with this image, Judy.
Wow! They look quite plump, over fed. The real "American" gator. This is one park I've not been too. They certainly do not look real. Great capture.

24 Mar 2009 1:28pm

@Barbara: Thank you, Barb, for your educated comment ... you get to see them in the 'wild'.
I think you'll enjoy tomorrow's posting! :D

john4jack from Corvallis, United States

Hauled out for a little sun. We could use some of that sun here in Corvallis. Neat capture, Judy.

24 Mar 2009 1:42pm

@john4jack: We may have the sun ... and the all-too-dry weather, while you have the beautiful coastline!
Florida is in dire straits as to its lack of rain ... not sure where it will take us.

LeenaM from Joensuu, Finland

Taking a sun bath and they really seem to enjoy it!!
What was Kayla thinking about them?

Nice Tuesday to you, Judy!

24 Mar 2009 1:46pm

@LeenaM: Kayla had difficulty realizing they were alive at first, but later she saw some moving.
Thank you, Leena.

Eleftheria from Athens, Greece

Brrrr....Scary!

24 Mar 2009 2:28pm

@Eleftheria: You are correct ... they could be very scary if they weren't fenced in!
Wait until tomorrow's shot, thought ... it's even more scary!

Scott Schilling from San Martin, United States

This really makes me want to jump in the water Judy! What do they feed these crocs at meal time?

24 Mar 2009 4:16pm

@Scott Schilling: Yeah, right! :D ... They used to demonstrate the feeding of whole, freshly killed chickens. To see it dropped into the water and see how FAST the alligator can open its jaws and clamp down on the chicken gives one a healthy respect for NOT being anywhere close to them. Now that feeding platform is gone.

Chris from South Jersey, United States

wow - although with them so still I guess you could become complacent around them, I have seen video of how fast they move - worthy of respect!!

24 Mar 2009 4:52pm

@Chris: Absolutely ... those jaws can clamp down so fast it is truly scary to watch!

Lorraine from Gatineau, Canada

Alligator skin, they really should apply some sunthingy...lol I love this, don't get too close my dear

24 Mar 2009 5:37pm

@Lorraine: Hee, hee........you'll love tomorrow's shot! :D

Bookfool from Mississippi, United States

They do have a concrete look about them, don't they?

24 Mar 2009 5:55pm

@Bookfool: I agree, hence the title! :D

Marla from Helsinki, Finland

They look scary. Great shot!

24 Mar 2009 7:35pm

@Marla: Thank you, Marla ... you'll have to see tomorrow's post!

Susan from Fort Lauderdale, FL, United States

cool shot..... i'm posting some of the everglades gator shots soon!!!

24 Mar 2009 11:42pm

@Susan: Thanks, Susan ... and tomorrow's is a closeup!

Fliss from Melbourne Beach, United States

They are sitting there waiting for a snack to walk along :)

25 Mar 2009 12:35am

@Fliss: I think you're right, Fliss.

observing from North West, United Kingdom

A wonderful shot Judy... but, that fence dosent look too safe :-0

25 Mar 2009 1:27am

@observing: So far as I know, the gators haven't been able to scale the fence! <grin>

Jen from Alpharetta, United States

Cool and scary capture...hope that fence is secure

25 Mar 2009 1:56am

@Jen: Thanks, Jen ... I hope so too! :D

EYES WIDE SHUT from The library of my soul, United Kingdom

Such magnificent creatures, and so prehistoric in appearance. A superb shot, Judy. Love the title as an explanation

25 Mar 2009 4:23am

@EYES WIDE SHUT: It was funny how many people standing around looking at them were saying, "Are those REAL?"
Yeeeeeeeeesssssssss!!!
