I think you're right, VF; this is probably a box turtle.

Thank you so much for visiting my blog; your comments are greatly appreciated. I apologize for not getting to all of your posts. I will visit as time permits.

EYES WIDE SHUT from The library of my soul, United Kingdom

How cute, how tiny! A lovely little turtle, the detailing in that shell always fascinates me.

15 Jan 2009 5:09am

@EYES WIDE SHUT: We might not have seen it if it hadn't been for its bright coloring! I agree on the detailing.

tyan from Singapore, Singapore

oh yes she is so tiny.:) but she doesnt look so here actually.:)

15 Jan 2009 5:16am

@tyan: Just over 2 inches, or about 2.5 centimeters...

Scott Schilling from San Martin, United States

Great little turtle! He is tiny! Great shot and you got the eyes - good work Judy!

15 Jan 2009 6:52am

@Scott Schilling: We're accustomed to the large gopher tortoises here, and the minute you get close they pull into their shell.
Thanks, Scott. This little fellow let me set him on the folding rule, eyes open ... cute!

Linerberry from Sumner, Christchurch, New Zealand

This has got to be one of the cutest shots ever!!!! What a little sweetie.
Is he yours?? I just want to cuddle him thought I know he's not really cuddly lol!

15 Jan 2009 7:00am

@Linerberry: Thank you, Caroline ... he really was a sweetie, and no, he was just spotted walking in the grass.

Heather from Federal Way, United States

Very CUTE, I adore turtles. The measuring stick is a nice touch!

15 Jan 2009 8:24am

@Heather: Thank you, Heather; he was a cute find in the grass!

Betty from New Jersey, United States

So tiny and beautiful... it almost doesn't look real! Beautiful, Judy!

15 Jan 2009 10:43am

@Betty: As you knew from yesterday's shots, he was really "real" ... and fun to have for a few shots!

Marie-Hélène Ammor from Casablanca/Paris, Morocco

Beautiful ! Great idea to take this photo on a (aïe I don't know the word !) meter to measure ??

15 Jan 2009 11:52am

@Marie-Hélène Ammor: Aïe = ouch ... slowly you're teaching a few words in French!
Mike had his folding rule in his hand so I took advantage of it! :D

Lorraine from Gatineau, Canada

She's a beautiful baby, no doubt about it...box???? or not lol

15 Jan 2009 1:20pm

@Lorraine: I love your "box???? or not"........... and I agree; it was fun to have him drop in for a photo op!

Susan from Pompano Beach, FL, United States

15 Jan 2009 1:30pm

@Susan: I agree with you and worried about it.

Eleftheria from Athens, Greece

@Eleftheria: :D

Jeff from Pembroke Dock, Wales., United Kingdom

The Turtle can't go out to play,
or sell his house or rent it;
for when he moves,
his house moves too,
and nothing can prevent it.

Nice one Judy,really smashing shot. ;>)

15 Jan 2009 3:21pm

@Jeff: What a wonderful little poem .... one I've never heard before, but it's sooooooo fitting!
Thanks, Jeff!

Buddy from Monroe Township, NJ, United States

I had a box turtle when I was a boy, they love cut up apples. Very, very cute. The carpenters rule was a great idea.

15 Jan 2009 3:32pm

@Buddy: Thanks, Buddy ... it was a lucky break that my hubby had his folding rule in his hand for my 'prop'.

Viewfinder from Bradenton, FL, United States

Judy, what a wonderful way to photograph this little guy. And so cooperative a model, too! Creativity, wonder, and beauty all go hand-in-hand. Blessings, gal!

15 Jan 2009 4:57pm

@Viewfinder: Why Mike had his folding rule in his hand i cannot remember, but it was good for a photo op prop!
Thank you ... blessings always appreciated!

Belle is not liking this cold weather and her Lasix is raising havoc in her system. She's unhappily sleeping in her crate anytime we're gone for more than two hours and at night, so she's not a very happy camper these days.

Chris from South Jersey, United States

how nice of him to pose for you!! Cute shot...

15 Jan 2009 6:22pm

@Chris: Thanks, Chris.

Bookfool from Mississippi, United States

Aw, what a little cutie! And, he didn't even mind being measured? Did you have to wait a long time or just plunk him and shoot?

15 Jan 2009 8:07pm

@Bookfool: S/he was very patient with me. After taking yesterday's shots, I picked him up and placed him on Mike's folding rule and he just stayed there. I obviously didn't wait long to grab a shot! :D

Magda from Vancouver, Canada

Great idea! And, you got a great detail and colour here! Nice work!

15 Jan 2009 8:42pm

@Magda: He was patient with me and so cute.

JJ from Jersey City, United States

15 Jan 2009 10:21pm

@JJ: Thanks, JJ ... but now, after all these warm comments, it's making me wonder if he survived...

gene from patterson, United States

i think this is a baby sulcata turtle. they grow extremely fast and can get to 250 pounds as adults. the babies are so cute. the adults are beautiful but take a lot of special care. oh yeah... great photo

16 Jan 2009 12:07am

@gene: Thank you, Gene, for your input on this little turtle that wandered into our yard.

Observing from West Cheshire, United Kingdom

''How did I get up here on these tramrails...'' ;) Cute shot Judy, hope he makes it.

Ina from Krugersdorp, South Africa

Just amazing! Love the colors :)

16 Jan 2009 6:22pm

@Ina: Thanks!

Japanalia from Yokohama, Japan

This is a marvellous baby! Such coulours and a great pattern on its back. You said it was timid....well, it looks courageous to me, it did not withdraw its head inside; in the contrary, looking right into the camera...at least with one eye!

18 Jan 2009 11:07am

@Japanalia: No, Belle was the timid one ... overly cautious. :D
I'm used to the large tortoises in our area that live in their sand holes and they ALWAYS retract if you get close.

Carol from United States

this is awesome

26 Feb 2009 6:37pm

@Carol: Thanks, Carol.
