Getting the Ladybug ready...

Posted by Judy (Brooksville, Florida, United States) on 28 December 2008 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

It was early April and the 'Ladybug' had just come out from beneath her winter cover on land. Ours was one of the first boats to be launched (you can see boats up to the right and empty slips). David and I were cleaning the 25' Cal 25 II and Mike was about to wash her dirty sides. At this time of year we anxiously awaited warmer days.

Our Dyer Dhow sailing dinghy in the foreground, named 'Bugoff', was ready and David was going to give her a short sail in the harbor before we called it a day. Although this photo doesn't include Mike, it's especially meaningful since David's been gone nine months.

Thank you so much for visiting my blog; your comments are greatly appreciated. I apologize for not getting to all of your posts. I will visit as time permits.

Marion from Nanaimo, BC, Canada

It certainly reminds one of how fragile life is. David was about 18 in this shot. So very precious Judy. I didn't know that you had a boat named "Ladybug". Warm hugs my dear friend. ♥♥

@Marion: You are so correct, Marion ... and it's a good thing we don't know what's ahead of us. David turned 18 that April, graduated from high school in June and joined the Navy in July, ready to 'see the world'.

Marie-Hélène Ammor from Casablanca/Paris, Morocco

Judy "Ladybug" you have many ladybugs in your life ...!! Wonderful memories ..! incredible to see empty slips ..!!A beautiful photo !

@Marie-Hélène Ammor: Yes, you're right ... different kinds of ladybugs too! :D
Re: the empty slips, if you look carefully at the upper right side of the photo, you can see boats up there on land, some still covered, waiting to be launched. Mike worked part-time at the boatyard and got preferential treatment.

tyan from Singapore, Singapore

thanks for sharing the photo with us,praying that you and family are coping well with the loss.I was born that year:)

@tyan: Thank you, Tyan, and yes, with God's help we are coping, most of the time pretty well.

Born in 1980, eh? You 'young thing'. :D

Betty from New Jersey, United States

Another beautiful memory of David. Love that the boat is named "Ladybug", too!

@Betty: Sometimes these memories are difficult ... but life is a reality check, I guess.

Michael Skorulski from Cigel, Slovakia

Wonderful, Judy. I have always liked sailing and built my own skipjack dinghy in my younger days.

28 Dec 2008 12:31pm

@Michael Skorulski: Oh, that's wonderful that you had a Skipjack ... small sailing dinghys are so much fun.

Jen from Alpharetta, United States

Very nice

Barbara from Florida, United States

Days of which fond memories are created. Preparing for the new season of sailing. Nice looking sailboat and I should have known it was named Ladybug, and the dinghy "Bugoff", I had to smile, how original.
It is a special image indeed.

28 Dec 2008 2:51pm

@Barbara: Thank you, Barb, and the memory is wonderful, yet somewhat bittersweet now...

Thank you also, for your input on Tarpon Springs ... we had such a wonderful day!

Viewfinder from Bradenton, United States

Cool. Judy y'all are a real maritime family, if this photo is any indication. Some have a boat, you have a fleet. Heh.

28 Dec 2008 3:43pm

@Viewfinder: You are funny, Glenn ... "a fleet" it is! We had so many sailing experiences over a period of a dozen years before Mike hurt his back and it all came to a sudden halt.

Chris from South Jersey, United States

what wonderful memories in this shot - and probably some memories of a lot of work as well getting the boat ready....as VF pointed out, since you had a fleet, does that make you an Admiral?

28 Dec 2008 5:15pm

@Chris: No, Chris, I wasn't the Admiral ... only the First Mate. However I wore a sweatshirt when manning the outboard motor while Mike was on the foredeck giving 'orders'. On the back of the shirt it said, "Don't shout at me!" :D

Lorraine from Gatineau, Canada

Capturing these loving moments must be a real gift now, so beautiful :)

28 Dec 2008 5:35pm

@Lorraine: Thank you, Lorraine ... it certainly is a gift to look back on so many memories!

Ina from Krugersdorp, South Africa

What a pretty picture :) Good old days, precious memories :_)

@Ina: Thank you, Ina.
