July 4th, after church...

Posted by Judy (Brooksville, Florida, United States) on 23 November 2008 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

Continuing with my anniversary year Sundays, this was taken as we left the sanctuary and before walking a block to city hall, to take part in a special ceremony there. I've donned a more weather-appropriate outfit for this hot day, while Mike and his friend (whose costume I also made) suffered in the heat. You can see that many of our parishioners took part, including our senior and assistant pastors.
Pastor Irvin G. Thursby on the right, was my pastor for 34 years.

Barbara from Florida, United States

Like something from a movie set. What a beautiful scene of characters with you and Mike in star roles. I love the little guy on the left in his complete costume. It must have been a wonderful sight to see everyone walking to city hall. Now this looks like incredible memories. Your "cooler" outfit looks so comfortable, great sewing Judy.

@Barbara: You're right, it was like stepping into a movie scene. So many took part, which made it fun. Looking at it again, I see a CT state senator, whose hat-less head is seen just above mine. Also, a next-door neighbor from my childhood on the far right.

tyan from Singapore, Singapore

what faithfulness to serve for 34 years! And have to agree with Barbara that its really great handiwork on your part, but yours really look SO comfy, it looks cool even in that hot weather:)

@tyan: Thanks, Ty ... we loved Rev. Thursby so much and were sad when he left ... but happy for him also.
The ballgown would have been a bit overdone for a Sunday morning and yes, quite warm. Did you notice my sandals peeking out from under the dress? <grin>

Betty from New Jersey, United States

Such a wonderful memory! Fantastic handiwork, Judy.

23 Nov 2008 11:43am

@Betty: We were gone all day yesterday so didn't get here - thanks for this also.

Jeff from Pembroke Dock, United Kingdom

Like stepping back in time...apart from the sun glasses...How many hours of sewing did it take to make those costumes..Phew ! makes me tired thinking about it.

23 Nov 2008 12:07pm

@Jeff: You're right ... the sun glasses weren't in keeping with the times, were they!
How many hours, gee, I don't remember; the joy was in the making of them.

Michael Skorulski from Cigel, Slovakia

A fabulous image and what beautifully made costumes!

23 Nov 2008 1:53pm

@Michael Skorulski: Thanks, Michael.

MJ from Delaware, United States

I really love your series... It reminds me of different times in my own life....... really great

23 Nov 2008 2:08pm

@MJ: Thanks, MJ ... it really has been fun looking back and remembering the good times.

Lorraine from Gatineau, Canada

What a great photo, what I love the most is that both of you took part in these activities, and that's so beautiful :)

23 Nov 2008 2:20pm

@Lorraine: Thank you, Lorraine ... it's a long story, but we quickly grabbed the chance to buy a house one block from this church which I grew up in. That offered our children the opportunity to do the same! xx

Kaneabel from London, United Kingdom

I love the sentiment of your photo series, Judy! Congratulations on your anniversary and wonderful family! May there be many more happy years of love and togetherness!

23 Nov 2008 2:29pm

@Kaneabel: Thank you so much for this warm comment ... we do pray for more years together, but also know that is out of our hands and we feel blessed for what we have already shared!

Eleftheria! from Athens, Greece

Nice costumes! Thank you for your opinion! I cut the horizon a little! :-) See it again if you like, i liked the blues and the castle and that's why i posted it. Thank you!

23 Nov 2008 4:31pm

@Eleftheria!: You sweet girl ... thank you and keep 'shooting' ... you are a marvel!

Fliss from Melbourne Beach, United States

I don't think I could walk around in these clothes all day... what a fun thing to be part of though.

23 Nov 2008 6:14pm

@Fliss: We had a wonderful year with a number of costumed events. Milford is a proud little city (about 62,000 back then). Settled in 1639, it truly is one of the United States' earlier communities.

Chris from South Jersey, United States

how fun that everyone got into the celebration!! More great memories....

23 Nov 2008 11:52pm

@Chris: Thanks, Chris ... and you're right; more great memories!

Observing from West Cheshire, United Kingdom

You did a great job there.... very realistic. Why is Mike wearing that funny tall hat...? lol

24 Nov 2008 1:55am

@Observing: Did that "funny hat" have something to do w/the 'split' between our two countries for a while? <grin>

Jen from Alpharetta, United States

What a fun shot and great memory!!!

24 Nov 2008 2:01am

@Jen: Thanks, Jen, and you're right it's a great memory!

Viewfinder from Bradenton, United States

What a fun day this must have been for all. Nicely remembered in this photo, btw.

24 Nov 2008 3:21am

@Viewfinder: Thank you, Glen ... it was a wonderful year in our town!

Magda from Vancouver, Canada

Wow! Amazing costumes! Absolutely breathtaking group photo! Love the colours and beautiful atmosphere...... How fun!

24 Nov 2008 3:59am

@Magda: We were so blessed to be part of that year in the history of our town!

hamid from tehran, Iran

very nice, reminds me of a movie, i think it was called Barry Lyndo

24 Nov 2008 7:27am

@hamid: Thank you ... and I did go look up the movie as I'm not familiar with it ... I think you're referring to "Barry Lyndon (1975)". I found a photo with men in tri-corn hats.
