Bicentennial Ball

Posted by Judy (Brooksville, Florida, United States) on 16 November 2008 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

In 1776, no ... 1976, our town of Milford, Connecticut, celebrated their bicentennial with year-long events. The first one we were involved with was the costume ball, in the month of February. Mike had bought his tri-corn hat in Williamsburg, VA, during a family camping trip, so I proceeded to create the rest of his costume, and then my own as well. The photos are poor, but the event was absolutely wonderful! ... PS: All that hair is a wig! :D

Thank you so much for visiting my blog; your comments are greatly appreciated. I apologize for not getting to all of your posts. I will visit as time permits.

@tyan: You're sweet, Ty ... some of the projects I tackled back then still amaze me. Fabrics were relatively inexpensive and I had the satisfaction of creating! Now I try to do it with my camera. *smile*

Jeff from Pembroke Dock, United Kingdom

I must congratulate you Maam on your use of the needle and thread, the officer gentleman seems to be very attentive,I hope he kept his musket at a safe distance..! Dangerous things muskets.! ;>))

16 Nov 2008 12:51pm

@Jeff: I think I was born with a needle in my hand; my maternal grandmother sewed and my mother did. At age five with my mother went next door for something to add to my Halloween costume and I decided to use her machine - drove the needle right through my index fingernail. Because I pulled back, the finder had to be lanced and the point of the needle removed. Even that didn't deter me from wanting to sew. By 14, I was making much of my own clothing. *smile*

Marion from Nanaimo, BC, Canada

You are such a talented lady. Here I am sewing straight edges today on my sewing machine that hasn't been used for four years. Just doing some mending on my curtains. But enough about my curtains. This is such a sweet shot. Love the costumes that you created. Just beautiful. Another wonderful peek into your past. Thanks for sharing these special memories with us Judy.

16 Nov 2008 11:28pm

@Marion: Sorry I couldn't pop in to help you with your mending! It was such fun to make them ... and then to wear them. You'll see us in costume again but not quite so formal the next time. :D

Observing from West Cheshire, United Kingdom

The costumes look authentic to me, first class Judy. Hollywood is calling for a seamstress ;)

16 Nov 2008 11:52pm

@Observing: Thanks, Mike ..... you're too sweet!

Barbara from Florida, United States

I had a fond chuckle when I first saw this. What fun and fabulous memories. I immediately said I'll bet you made the costumes and sure enough. Incredible sewing Judy.
This is great sharing old memories with us.

17 Nov 2008 4:37am

@Barbara: You're slowly getting to know who I am, Barb. I know this is supposed to be about our current photography, but when I look back, I see how keen I was on photos all those many years ago. My mother died when I was 40 and I wondered just how many years Mike and I would have together. Now I'm celebrating this special year!

Magda from Vancouver, Canada

You made those costumes!?! Wow! Amazing! If you were only closer to me I would have some interesting projects for you, my friend! :)
Nice diptych. Great photos and when it comes to the "quality", makes them that much more real - from those times in history.... ;) Well done! I always look forward to the Sunday images (I enjoy them all, of course but I love to see the past......)

17 Nov 2008 5:24am

@Magda: I loved seeing Paige and Tara in their beautiful dresses, and it takes me back to making dresses for Bridget, some of them with smocking, which I loved doing. The younger two want more current styles, so that's a chapter closed. ;(

Thank you for your comment on the photos' "quality" ... as I know it can't compare to current ones.

Eleftheria! from Athens, Greece

My mom said you made these! You HAVE talent!

17 Nov 2008 2:58pm

@Eleftheria!: Yes, Sweetie ... I did, and it was a joyful time creating them! xo

Magda from Vancouver, Canada

That's what I need for my photos Judy! The "older" style in clothing.... I would love to have those dresses for my girls - you wouldn't be bored with me around! ;)

18 Nov 2008 7:51am

@Magda: Maybe you need to search for some 'vintage' clothing for them; I've seen some wonderful photos of young girls in off-white handkerchief linen dresses, done in sepia tones that were award-winning photographs! I made an 'old style' long dress for Bridget's Christening, way back in 1987 ... a labor of love! I wish I had a photo of it!
