Impressions...

Looking back on my own footprints in the sand...

(I purposefully did not use the obvious title, "Footprints" for this photo, out of reverence for Mary Stevenson, the author of the immortal poem, written in 1936 .)

@hwalk: Thank you so much.

Barbara from Florida, United States

Very well done Judy. The piece of seagrass is a great addition. Nice transparent framing too.

@Barbara: Thanks, Barb ... I know the idea isn't original, but when I turned and looked back, I had to shoot some of them.

Lorraine from Gatineau, Canada

O I love this so much Judy, it reminds me of the Poem:
Last night I had a dream. I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from my life. For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand: one belonged to me, the other to the Lord.

After the last scene of my life flashed before me, I looked back at the footprints in the sand. I noticed that at many times along the path of my life, especially at the very lowest and saddest times, there was only one set of footprints.

This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it. “Lord, you said once I decided to follow you, You’d walk with me all the way. But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life, there was only one set of footprints. I don’t understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me.”

The Lord replied, “My son, my precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of suffering, when you could see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.”

@Lorraine: "........ it was then that I carried you."
God carried us through some dark and lonely days this year and we are forever grateful!

I know the poem very well and thought of it when I took the photo. We began a Lay Witness Mission last evening at our church, that runs all day today and tomorrow. I pray we will all be thinking of the 'footprints' in out lives and that He will carry us if need be. Blessings to you!

Very much like Girl Friday. A lovely idea and composition, Judy. Your presentation framing is excellent too.

Jeff from Pembroke Dock, United Kingdom

They are the only things you should ever leave on a beach...When they lead away I always feel sad. But that's another story....Were you carrying your left shoulder ?

4 Oct 2008 1:30pm

@Jeff: I like that ... "the only things we should leave on the beach..."
I do have a dominant side, don't I ... *smile*

Marion from Nanaimo, BC, Canada

I see what Jeff means, your right foot made a deeper impression. I too immediately thought of the Footprints poem. It is such a touching and beautiful poem and there have been so many times when He has carried me. The sunlight on the sand is beautiful and your framing is excellent. It doesn't take away from the image.

@Marion: That last 'left' (note: your corrective comment) footprint was when I decided to turn and capture my photo and yes, you can certainly see where my foot 'dug in'. I don't know how they'd have been if I'd walked a mile on the beach. <grin>

Thank you for your warm comments. I also attest to the numbers of times He's carried me.

Marion from Nanaimo, BC, Canada

I meant your left foot makes a deeper impression. Duh!! Enjoy your day.

Judy - wonderful photo. I like that you are looking back at the footprints - so many times photos like this (including mine) are looking forward at the footprints. The lighting and shadows are wonderful....

4 Oct 2008 4:28pm

@Chris: The angle of the sun indicated my looking back, otherwise who knows what I might have done. *smile*
Thank you for your comment, Chris.
