Cranking up for July 4th - a series!

Posted by Judy (Brooksville, Florida, United States) on 29 June 2008 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

While visiting our daughter, this and the following 4 photos were taken in Long Branch, NJ

Fireworks were originally invented by the Chinese, for entertainment purposes, as a natural extension of the Chinese invention of gunpowder.

America's earliest settlers brought their enthusiasm for fireworks to the United States. Fireworks and black ash were used to celebrate important events long before the American Revolutionary War. The very first celebration of Independence Day was in 1777, six years before Americans knew whether the new nation would survive the war; fireworks were a part of all festivities. In 1789, George Washington's inauguration was also accompanied by a fireworks display. This early fascination with their noise and color continues today. (From Wikipedia)

@Michael Skorulski: Yes, Michael, I agree.

29 Jun 2008 7:49am

@Japanalia: That little camera did a super job; I've not had such good results since!

Betty from New Jersey, United States

Judy, this is a wonderful shot... my first attempts were not as spectacular! (posted on July 4th).

29 Jun 2008 10:16am

@Betty: Thank you, Betty. That little Canon S2 did a super job with them.

Chris from South Jersey, United States

Great capture - fireworks can be tricky but you captured them wonderfully....

29 Jun 2008 11:51am

@Chris: Thank you, Chris ... I agree they can be tricky, but the Canon had a fireworks setting, that really worked!

Lorraine from Gatineau, Canada

EXCELLENT...what a magnificent Light shot, I've yet to accomplish that, well done my friend :)

29 Jun 2008 1:05pm

@Lorraine: Thank you, Lorraine ... I've not had the opportunity to try again - we don't have a local display where we are.

Marion from Nanaimo, BC, Canada

Very cool picture Judy. I love fireworks. A fireworks setting eh...umm I will have to check out my little Canon Power Shot and see if it has one of those settings because I have never been able to capture such a wonderful picture of them.

29 Jun 2008 2:48pm

@Marion: I don't find a fireworks setting in my new little Canon Powershot SD850, and I'm disappointed.

MJ from Delaware, United States

29 Jun 2008 8:06pm

@MJ: Thanks, MJ ... I was pleased myself. ;D

Andrew Gould from Sydney, Australia

I love the diagonal in the composition and the streak of light. The latter makes this quite different.

29 Jun 2008 9:04pm

@Andrew Gould: Thank you, Andrew - it was fun to take this - and the ones following in the next few days.

tyan from Singapore, Singapore

@tyan: Have you ever read a little book titled, "Balcony People" by Joyce Landorf Heatherley? It's about focusing on those people in your life who are in your own 'balcony'. I guess I'll be one in yours! xo

PS: Coping with little ones is hard, no matter what generation, but peers have different expectations now, I think.

Viewfinder from Bradenton, United States

Most cool shot Judy. I love seeing fireworks in real life; this is the next best thing.

30 Jun 2008 2:57am

@Viewfinder: Thanks, VF!

Barbara from Florida, United States

5 Stars and more for this magnificent capture Judy.
Excellent timing as I know just how difficult fireworks are to capture. Wonderful clarity and steady hand.
Looking forward to what is to follow.

30 Jun 2008 3:50am

@Barbara: Thank you, Barb ...... and by the way, these were all hand held - no tripod!

That little camera did a wonderful job. It has all these scene modes:
• Custom
• Portrait
• Landscape
• Night Scene
• My Colors
• Stitch Assist
• Foliage
• Snow
• Beach
• Fireworks
• Indoor
• Night Snapshot

Barbara from Florida, United States

Isn't technology incredible. All of the settings and options right in your hand to capture something beautiful instantly. Now for a higher price we opted to twist and turn to focus and adjust settings to get the shot right. But it is fun!

1 Jul 2008 2:52am

@Barbara: Right now I wish I had my little Canon S2 back. <grin>
I'm studying but having problems........ ;-(

shahab from Qazvin, Iran
